Pupil Services administers services that include guidance, health, school psychology, and special education. The team includes school counselors, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, a physical therapist, a parent mentor and school psychologists. They work together with teachers, administrators, and parents in building Intervention Assistance Teams. These teams use a collaborative problem solving process to help understand student strengths and needs. The team then designs appropriate interventions for each student.

The Guidance Staff consists of one counselor for Wilcox Primary, one counselor for Bissell Elementary, two counselors for Dodge Intermediate, two counselors at R. B. Chamberlin Middle and four counselors at Twinsburg High. Peer mediation, conflict resolution, individual record keeping, character education and support groups are a focus each school year.

Special Education provides services to approximately 10% of its student body who have been identified as having a disability. These services include specialized instruction, modifications in curriculum, and accommodations as appropriate to access school programs. Eligibility for these services is determined through an evaluation team report (ETR) by school personnel and parental input in accordance with state and federal definitions and regulations. An individualized educational program (IEP) is then determined by a team as well.

The Ohio Department of Education lists the following thirteen disability categories:

  1. Intellectual disability
  2. Hearing impairment, including deafness
  3. Speech or language impairment
  4. Visual impairment, including blindness
  5. Emotional disturbance
  6. Orthopedic impairment
  7. Autism
  8. Traumatic brain injury
  9. Other health impairment
  10. Specific learning disability
  11. Deaf-blindness
  12. Multiple disabilities
  13. Developmental delay

Administrative Guideline Changes

The Twinsburg City School District has recently revised Administrative Guideline 5605, Disciplining Students with Disabilities.

Cuyahoga Valley Career Center

Transition planning is mandated in the Individual with Education Act (IDEA). The transition planning requirements in IDEA includes development of an individual transition plan. Transition planning and services focus on a coordinated set of student centered activities designed to facilitate the students movement from school to post school activities, including post-secondary education. It is a collaborative effort and a responsibility shared by the student, parents, school personnel, and post-secondary personnel.

Transition Coordinator
